Ground Screws - Residential
Ground screws are an affordable option for garden sheds, summerhouses, and garden rooms. They offer the same load-bearing capacity as a traditional concrete foundation and can even provide greater stability by reaching deeper into the subsoil. Additionally, ground screws are environmentally friendly and can be easily installed as part of a streamlined construction process. This makes them a great choice for building safe and economical foundations on poor subsoil or at sites with a deep load-bearing layer.

Sheds, Summerhouse, Garden room
Ground screws make the ideal base for sheds, summerhouses and garden rooms.
Ground screws are clean to install
Ground screws do not require the ground to be dug out in order to provide a solid foundation. Ground screws ARE the solid foundation! A small pilot hole is drilled into the ground and the ground screw goes directly in. No digging, no mess.
Ground screws can take the weight
The smallest ground screw we install is 800mm long and, depending on the ground in your area, provide a load capability of around 600kg per screw. A 6 x 4 shed would have 4 ground screws, one at each corner. That will give a stable load capability of over 2 tonnes! If you tell us the size of the shed floor, we will also supply and install the required floor frame made from pressure treated 4 x 2 timber. We’ll bolt the frame to the ground screws and make sure it’s level, square, and ready for your new shed, summerhouse or garden room to be fitted to it.
Ground screws are faster
The ground screws and floor frame for a 10 x 8 shed can be installed in a couple of hours which means the shed and the base can be fitted the same day. There’s no waiting for concrete to set or the cement under some paving slabs to go off. Ground screws are immediately loadable.
Ground screws are stable
The maximum frost depth in the U.K. is considered to be 450mm. Our shortest ground screw will easily exceed this depth meaning that frost heave will not affect it. We go into the subsoil so settlement doesn’t cause a problem. Tree roots will not lift the ground screws, generally they don’t cause a problem for our installation team either.
Ground screws are cheap
Although ground screws do generally work out cheaper than having concrete laid, there are cheaper ways of creating a foundation. However, cheaper isn’t better: Slab bases are very prone to movement.
D.I.Y. brick, cinder block, or screw bases that use plates to spread the load on the top of the soil are only as stable as the topsoil isn’t. They move.
If you want to make sure that the base for your new garden building isn’t going to move, distort, settle, or break its back, you need to make sure it’s not on the topsoil. Now you have a lot of digging to do and topsoil to either dispose of or spread around the garden.
Ground screws can be temporary
If, in a few years’ time, you decide you want to move your garden building, or get a bigger one, or just dispose of it all together, all you need to do is unscrew the ground screws and fill the holes with soil. Job done. If you’re relocating the shed, use the ground screws again. If you’re making the shed bigger, add some additional ground screws. It really is that simple.
Ground screws prolong the life of your garden structure
Garden structures rot from the ground upwards. That’s a fact. The floor timbers sit on the base, rainwater sits on the base, air can’t get around it to allow it to dry and so the timber rots.
By using ground screws with a pressure treated floor frame, the floor frame is never in ground contact. It can’t sit in a puddle, rainwater runs off it, and if it does somehow get wet, air can get around it to dry it out.
What about animals living under my garden structure?
All garden structures provide ideal places for animals and rodents to live under. However, if a fox burrows under your concrete base it will only need to go under it by 30cm to make the base subside or collapse. Our ground screws are a minimum of 80cm long, Mr Fox has a lot of digging to do to get under that!
What about rats and mice? Well, they will live under any shed or summerhouse that will provide them with shelter. Ground screws with a timber or lightweight metal floor frame leave a gap between the floor and the ground, that means it’s draughty under there. Rodents, like us, don’t like to live in a draught.
Summer House/Garden Room
Ground screws are an ideal foundation solution for summerhouses and garden rooms. Often used for leisure purposes rather than work, summerhouses and log cabins require foundations that can support the majority of the load on the perimeter and below any adjoining walls where the roof load is transferred.
They are often located in beautiful spots by the water or on the edge of wooded areas. Ground screws are non-intrusive and have won many contracts in conservation areas and root protection zones, making them a great choice for preserving the natural landscape. Additionally, ground screws can be installed without the need for excavation, spoil removal, or heavy machinery, saving cost and preserving the natural environment.
